How To Repair A Split Roof Truss

  1. Hi all,

Spotted this in my loft the other day and information technology is now held with a couple of Irwin clamps...

An upright roof truss (7 in a span of 10 trusses) has a separate along the grain of the timber; it is nonetheless intact only the split looks equally though it will become through completely sooner than later.

I hope to brace it in some way in order to repair it without dissentious it further, so that it is structurally sound again.

Thanks in advance for whatever input.

    Cheers!

    Mark.

  3. That'southward an odd thing to happen.

If it were mine I'd be inclined to get some skilful wood glue into the crack and clamp it up til set then get a couple of strips 150ish wide of eighteen ply and screw and glue them to each side

  4. Thank you for the advice Stevie.

I'g guessing it may have been knocked and damaged at some bespeak and ended upwards splitting.

And then 18mm ply... and so do you recommended going wider than the truss? What length should I go to?

    Thank you again!

    Mark.

  5. Mark, I would seriously desire to know why that had happened. That looks similar the king post. Is information technology under extreme load for some reason? has there been a supporting lintel/beam been removed beneath information technology as a result of a habitation improvement?

I'm bold information technology'south a slice of 89mm x 38mm cls timber. Temporary fix with the Irwin speed clamp will do merely the all-time set up is put another piece of cls in as a sister. Become everything aligned and commodities through with 8mm coach bolts. You could add a couple of star connectors merely nice large penny washers should do the job. Y'all might like to make full the crack up with foaming mucilage prior to clamping and bolting.

The bottom chord/necktie beam is held to the rex post at that identify past a pressed steel connector, information technology is a piece of mild steel possibly painted bluish. Ensure that is not damaged in whatsoever fashion. It'due south important the sis is connected to the bottom chord. It should also be continued to the rafters, they're the long pieces of wood that supports the roof.

  6. Hello Vivaro,

Right it is 89mm 10 38mm cls timber.

I am not certain how this happened. I am normally observant so would have thought I would have noticed information technology before when pottering about the loft. Nosotros merely have a few boxes against the external wall, nothing heavy.

No alterations to the house or roof tile, merely a standard build. The business firm is 16 years old, could information technology be a manufacturing error? I can't imagine so equally I am certain the mistake would have appeared immediately or very soon afterward?

The cold water tank is nearby, but the platform is ply with extra supports perpendicular to the joists as built at the fourth dimension of the house structure.

Cavity insulation installers were in the loft unsupervised a few years back and had a couple of tenants too for 18 months, merely I'd suspect they would have had to strike that piece of timber pretty roughly to crusade harm similar that?

Regarding the sister timber install you mention, what bolt spacings would you lot recommend?

I'll check all connections and get back to you lot.

    Thanks for the communication.

    Marking.

  7. Mark, every bit long equally there is no obvious problem on the loading side then it's simply important to become the repair done soonest. I'1000 not sure virtually your competency level buty I would advise y'all to get a skilled man in.
Have the sis wood handy, cut to length and ensure information technology is knot gratuitous. Pour the foaming glue down the crevice and screw together. Place the sis slice in identify and clench or screw. Don't bother well-nigh it getting gum on it.
Have some 65 mmx8mm coach bolts and washers handy. Using a 10mm spur wood drill bit, drill through and put almost 400mm apart. Knock push the bolt in place and using a speed winch tighten the nut. Ensure you have a penny washer next to the wood on the nut side. Perhaps utilize self locking nuts to terminate loosening or use 2 basics per commodities.
    Do not over tighten.
    Good luck matey
  8. Hello Vivaro,

Thank you again for the advice.

It's not the king post thankfully, but a strut connecting the top and bottom chords. The steel connectors are intact at both ends.

The timber is actually smaller, it is 70mm x 35mm x 2m CLS.

Does this affect the coach commodities size you mention? Should a motorcoach commodities besides go through the sister piece at the ends? i.e. too through the top and bottom chords?

Is the sis slice glued to the original timber?

Pitiful for all the questions - I volition become a builder in, I simply would like to ensure that he follows and has a like suggestion to your detailed guidance!

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  9. Hi Mark, let me stress that's the manner I'd do information technology. The bolt has to go through both pieces of wood the original and its sister piece. Personally I wouldn't set out glue information technology but if it's glued it's no biggie. Gluing the damaged piece is withal crucial to try and get some strength and integrity back into the structure. Just as sistering a new piece in place is crucial. Once washed you need to keep an eye on it.
Make certain your chippie has proficient access, a clear working area, skilful light and an available power source. The remainder is upwardly to him. Btw you're doing the right thing getting someone in because at that place could exist other problems. Give him a mug of tea and he'll check it out give him a kit kat with the tea and he'll check all the trusses. Y'all know what I mean, lol.
I believe that crevice resulted from a damaged piece of wood being used in the manufacturing process.
    Jord86 and KIAB like this.
  10. Thanks over again Vivaro, forgot to respond concluding week!

    Thank you,

    Mark.
